The submitter wrote: “Keep the supply & return registers close together so the air can flow freely back to the furnace. The house seems a little chilly and the furnace keeps running. This needs more study.”

    Forget the room, just duct the furnace to itself and save on the cost of installing all that pesky invasive ductwork.

    …although, I must say, it looks like it still manages to make a good dust filter.

    That may not be an air return. It may simply be a grill to allow hot air to pass into a small adjoining room like a pantry or half bath. Some older homes do this when it’s difficult to run duct into the adjoining room.
