I think he is using his shirt to block out the sun and prevent glare on the screen. There is an ATM near me that is pretty much unusable a couple of hours every day because of glare.

Yep, Cableguy 1000, you got it! Even though my bank’s ATM is on the north side of the building, it is hard to read the screen at times.
