“It’s a picture of a re-purposed satellite dish that I converted into a solar pool heater with the addition of an old garden hose and some zip ties.”

Right, because the entire surface area of the pool water will absorb less heat than that little coil of rubber mounted to a dish.

Slom, pool water typically reflects more than it absorbs and much of what it absorbs is lost through the evaporative effect, keeping the water cool. The closed system in this kludge allows non-evaporative heat transfer to the water. I don’t think the elliptical dishing here provides much additional help because the coil isn’t at the focus, but it would still heat the water in the hose. Some friends we have in Venezuela heat their laundry water using a garden hose placed on the roof of their house. It works just fine.

Does the water circulate by itself via some sort of convection or does the system need to be primed?
