The van was recalled and when they replaced the axle we asked them to bust loose the spare and we started keeping it inside the van. But a recent trip to Florida with our sons and lots of luggage necessitated finding someplace to put the spare – hence the redneck repair shown in the photo, we used tie down straps to hold the spare to the roof rack, then my mechanic son came up with the brilliant idea to use the plastic zip ties to tighten up and keep the excess length of the straps from flapping. An added bonus, it was really easy to find in parking lots.”

My old VW bus had the spare on the inside. When a person ran a red light causing me to T-bone him that spare became a flying projectile. I’m luck to be alive.
you drive from MI to FLA? what is that like a week long trip? if your spare rusted to your van, it is old enough not to be driven from MI to FLA. Take a flight next time, or train or something
A week long trip? Lol it’s only about thousand miles. Can be done in one day with two or more drivers trading off. Most people take two days, slowpokes take three.
I drove with a buddy to Texas from Michigan, unloaded our friends furniture from the Uhual and then drove back. Did the whole thing over one Saturday and Sunday.
Hell it’s only three or four days to go from New York to California.
Take your flights and shove em, especially with the BS TSA these days.
