“This is a gear in my 10 year old shredder. A tooth just recently broke and I couldn’t see spending $70+ on a new shredder. I drilled a pilot hole, put in a screw then cut the head off the screw.”
That is only a temporary or emergency repair. soon the corresponding tooth in the small gear will be worn away. But first the screw will probably work its way loose. Good effort though.

First of all they are different sized gears, so there is no corresponding gear. Second of all, this is white trash repairs; there’s no such thing as a ‘permanent repair’. A dab of crazy glue will prevent the bit of screw from working loose, and if the wear from the screw on the other gear teeth is a worry he can cover it with a bit of gorilla glue or epoxy so it has a plastic-like texture, then file it doen if the glue makes it tooth too big. or…. he could replace ALL the teeth with screws.

Shiro, your an idiot. Obviously if its turning another gear, there is a corresponding gear. And yes, the metal screw will tear the shit out of the plastic gear its meshing with.
If you’re spending $70 on a shredder, don’t force-feed it a 70-page document all at once. Even my bargain-basement $20 6-page Staples-brand shredder still works, with a motor that has lost 90% of it’s torque and jams regularly, a loose power cord socket, and duct tape holding the smashed paper collection bin together.
I eventually bought a new, heaver-dute Staples shredder, and that cost $70, but after 3 years it is still going strong, and has not broke at all.
