The vice grips are not the redneck issue here, it’s the fact you let your cables get some much corrosion on them that the cables corroded in half.
And I must point out that that battery looks like it’s best days are behind it.
Personally I don’t consider it redneck if it is not permanent. If it gets you home, then you repair it before you drive it again, then it was simply the best solution at the time. Or they could have spent about $150 on a tow truck. They shouldn’t have allowed the cables to become so corroded in the first place, but sometimes these things happen.
