    Forget the room, just duct the furnace to itself and save on the cost of installing all that pesky invasive ductwork.

    …although, I must say, it looks like it still manages to make a good dust filter.

    That may not be an air return. It may simply be a grill to allow hot air to pass into a small adjoining room like a pantry or half bath. Some older homes do this when it’s difficult to run duct into the adjoining room.
