That’s normal procedure. Their jaws aren’t nearly as strong as you would thibk and they can’t open their mouths against the pressure.
Yup–‘gators have tremendous biting strength, but not nearly as much opening power in their jaws, so duct tape works!
These suckers make the biggest gator look like a pussycat. If he got loose it would be carnage,no second chance,even known to bite the outboard off the back of the boat,while it is running. If he rips the transom out you then run on water.
