Ever hear the expression “Dead as a door nail?” Well, “door nail” actually refers to that plate that a door knocker hits. It’s “dead” because it’s been struck so much.

I dunno – my finger “nail” is flat, rather like a plate. Makes as much sense as any other explanation I’ve heard, and a lot more than that nonsense aboout throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
I dont recall the complete story, but Im pretty sure it had to do with nailing a coffin closed.
