Qualified Redneck Repair

by DebbieWTR
December 3, 2012

“My friend with no spare got a stick the size of my thumb through the sidewall of his tire. We broke the bead so we could reach a hand inside the tire, then cut rubber washers from the inner fender flap on his Toyota. Using a bolt, metal washer and rubber washer on the outside, and a rubber washer, metal washer, and nut on the inside, we plugged the hole pumped the tire up, and he drove home. Rumor has it he drove around town like that for over a week (which I think qualifies it as a redneck repair).”

Hey, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Once I temporarily replaced a radiator cap with a V8 bottle lid, a piece of bicycle inner tube, and a hose clamp. Too bad I didn’t take a pic, I coulda posted it here. lol

how did you re-seat the bead? I saw some guys on the tele do it by spraying some flammable aerosol ( hairspray or anything would work) into the tire and then igniting it- it popped the bead right back up tight on the rim in an instant.

You don’t need to break the bead. Just use a screw used for metal roofing. Already has the rubber washer on it. Use your cordless drill and a 3/8 hex head driver. Screw it in from the outside, pump it up, and take it into town for repair. Also makes it easy for the repair guy to find the hole. Been there, done that. More than once.
