My kid had a bed like this growing up but we had the openings to the crates pointing out so he could put stuff in them.

I went to a hotel, and they had one of those “Sleep Number” beds … I put it at 100, and it still wasn’t hard enough. I ended up sleeping on the floor.

Well, if they threw a bedspread over the base setup, and then added some decent linens on the top, you’d never know what the bed was sitting on, and it would look okay.
Well it keeps the mattress off the floor and I’m betting it makes it firm.
