I gotta admit not a bad idea. Why take up a whole sink to dry dishes when if you simply cut out the bottom of the shelf above the sink and put in a wire rack they can drip dry. Good idea or bad idea?

I like it .. maybe not for my house but my trailer yes.. who wants to have do wash dry and put away dishes when you can do so much more fun things. .. definitely worth trying in the trailer
wont the things on the bottom take much longer to dry since the stuff on top is just dripping more water on it ???
Those are used *atleast* in Finland, and they’re the best. What comes to the water dripping – you could always start from top. Altho they dry _fast_..
Yup. Good idea. As usual it requires some refinement, but the base concept is sound.
From the looks of this picture I’d guess that this is a typical European or perhaps Russian kitchen. This sort of thing is very common there because kitchens are smaller and most people don’t have automatic dishwashers.
good idea for a small space…but I would worry about the bottom shelf, being wood, eventually rotting away….maybe just attach the rack to wall?
Refinements are definitely in order, having no wood at all on the bottom shelf would be preferable, but certainly great for cottages/bachelor apartments/efficiency suites!
Except it’s not a drying rack,just ventilated storage.
Place items to dry on top first. That way, they’re already partly dry when items are placed below.
If I understand the description, the bottom of the cabinet has a hole in it, so water can drip into the sink. Still would need several coats of polyurethane, however.
I think you will find this is how resturants, etc, are required to dry their dishes as it is actually the most hygenic way to do it….no contact with contaminated tea towells, etc.

This is completely normal system in Finland. Superpractical and no fuzz -system. Can’t understand why not everyone in the world use them.

I disagree. I believe this is common in on-campus housing these days in colleges. Europe or Russia? I don’t think so!

Fairy dish detergent and the wall faucet arrangement are both common in England.
It’s not safe to generalize that most people in Eastern Parts of Europe do not own dishwashers.
Most Finns for example have one if just their kitchen space allows.
Drying cabinet is the best thing since, or before, sliced bread. Just like cheese slicer.
Everyone should have one.
