“I saw this “plate” in LA. I wonder how the owner got from NY to LA without numerous tickets. I’d figure if you owned a BMW you could afford a replacement plate instead of a handwritten piece of cardboard.”
they won’t get a ticket if its an actual legal plate written by the dealer.

Dealers can hand write plates after sale. Although most print one out that looks more professional, a hand written one is valid as long as the numbers check out when run. Of course they are only valid for a set number of days before you need a real one.

Dealers do not hand write plates dumbasses. The only thing I have ever seen them hand write is a temporary plate, and even that is on special paper.

Who’s the dumbass Anon? In your first sentence you say they don’t do that, then in your second sentence you say they do. I never said they write a permanent plate, and neither did Uglycar69, he simply said they can write a legal one.
The majority of dealers print out a temp tag, and most of them are taped inside the back window. Some states require the temp tag to be mounted on the actual plate holder, and they are the only ones that need something “special” in any way (paper or otherwise) to hold up to the elements. And of course all states have their own rules, I’m sure some no longer allow hand written tags, but they all did it this way in the past.
You probably shouldn’t call people “dumbasses” when you don’t know what you’re talking about, especially when you contradict your own claim within the first two sentences you write.
